What is augmented reality and how does it work?

Augmented reality, usually shortened to AR, adds digital content to a live view of the physical world. Unlike virtual reality, it does not replace the room around you. How augmented reality works

A phone or headset uses its camera and motion sensors to understand the scene. Computer vision identifies a surface or reference point, tracking keeps that point stable as the device moves, and a renderer draws the digital object with the correct perspective. Furniture AR adds one more requirement: the model must use accurate real-world dimensions, otherwise placement looks convincing but gives the shopper the wrong answer about fit.

The main augmented reality types

Common augmented reality use cases include navigation overlays, face filters, education, maintenance instructions, museum labels, product try-on, and room planning. In ecommerce, AR is most useful when context changes the decision: eyewear on a face, paint on a wall, or a sofa at true scale beside a doorway. These examples solve a concrete question rather than adding a visual effect for its own sake.

Augmented reality versus virtual reality

AR adds a digital object to the shopper's actual surroundings; virtual reality replaces those surroundings with a simulated environment. A furniture VR showroom can be immersive, but it normally requires a headset and asks the shopper to enter a separate world. Furniture AR works from the room the shopper already wants to furnish, which makes it the more direct tool for checking size, style, and placement before purchase.
